“We read about cuts and more cuts. But what we don’t see is any sustained attempt to cut out the politics.” — Gavin Newsom

Twitter

Twitter is becoming one of the most powerful new tools in our campaign. If you have a Twitter account, click the button to the right and sign up to become a Twitter captain for Gavin Newsom. You’ll be the first to know about our Tweets and we’ll ask for your help on Twitter organizing and fundraising drives and tweeting campaign updates.

If you don’t have a Twitter account or are new to Twitter, check out the tip sheet below we made to help you get set up on Twitter, along with some strategies to get involved and help the campaign. Happy Tweeting!

Getting Started:

  1. If are already signed up on Twitter and want to follow Gavin Newsom, click here. This will take you to Gavin’s Twitter page. Click the “follow” button under the photo on the left. If you want to receive Gavin’s tweets on your phone, make sure to set the device link to “on.”

  2. If you are not signed up on Twitter – here’s what to do. Go to www.twitter.com. Click join and then fill in your name and email and create a password.

  3. If you have a web-based email like Yahoo or Gmail, Twitter can search your contacts and connect you with friends already on Twitter. If you are new to Twitter, we highly suggest doing this – don’t worry, they can’t keep your emails.

  4. If you want to receive “tweets” on your phone click the “Turn on your mobile phone” link. Enter in your cell phone number and hit save. You will receive a text message confirmation on your cell phone – simply respond to this text and you will be authorized to receive mobile “tweets.”

Getting involved using Twitter:

On Twitter, Gavin Newsom = @GavinNewsom. If you talk about Gavin on Twitter use his Twitter name @GavinNewsom – this will make sure it shows up on his page and will help direct traffic to his page.

Tweet about Gavin Newsom: If there is an article or the campaign took an action that you liked, please let your network know by tweeting about it. If you came to one of our town halls, heard the Mayor on the radio, like a story in the paper or the blogs – a quick tweet is a great way to grow the campaign. If you donate money to our campaign, please tweet about it to your friends. This is a great way to show your support.

RT: “ReTweet.” It’s like forwarding, but for Twitters instead of emails. If you see something interesting from @GavinNewsom that you like, you should “ReTweet” it so that the people following you (your network of friends – not Gavin Newsom’s) can see it. You just post the message from @GavinNewsom and type in “RT” before the message.

Add Twitter to your other social networking sites: You can have Twitter automatically update your status on Facebook whenever you post a tweet. It’s free. Just go to the Facebook Twitter application setup page, log in, and put in your Twitter information. Facebook will ask if you want to update your status automatically whenever you post a tweet.

  • If you use more social networking services like Flickr, LinkedIn, MySpace, Friendster and so on, then consider using Ping.fm to update your status. When you post a message on Ping.fm, it automatically posts that message across all of your social networking sites.

Reply to a Tweet from @GavinNewsom: Start your tweet with the @GavinNewsom. The reply shows up in @GavinNewsom’s Reply page on Twitter. This is a way to have a direct conversation with the Mayor and for you to share it with your contacts without showing up in their feed. It will also show up if you search for @GavinNewsom.
