Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom’s Statement on the Proposition 8 Ruling

Teaser:

“Today’s decision by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to reject re-consideration of their previous ruling that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional is another ripple of hope adding to the growing current that will soon sweep away one of the last remaining walls of discrimination in our state.

It reaffirms the fundamental American principle that all people deserve full human equality under the law.

As the Ninth Circuit previously ruled, Prop. 8 serves no purpose other than the creation of a separate, second-class citizenry by denying the LGBT community the simple right of marriage equality.

Until we at last achieve our founding proposition that all people are treated equal, we must continue the fight in the courts and at the ballot box until every Californian is afforded the same sacred liberty -- no matter how they look, where they live or who they love.”
