Newsom for California Launches First Spot in Democratic Gubernatorial Primary
** Release of Online Ad Will Reach More Than 500,000 Democratic Primary Voters and Urge Support for Constitutional Convention
Newsom for California today launched the first spot of the Democratic gubernatorial primary, a 60-second online ad calling for a fresh start for the state. The ad urges a constitutional convention to reform California’s government, and will be followed by an online policy “wiki” that incorporates the input of voters and an online organizing drive.
“It’s time for a new direction in California. For too long, Californians have been victim to a broken system that leads to stalemate year in and year out,” said Mayor Newsom. “It’s time for real reform in Sacramento, reform that will put our state back on the path to opportunity and prosperity. A constitutional convention is the first step toward this larger goal.”
The spot, first in a series that will be released over the next two months, will reach more than 500,000 California Democratic primary voters via email, Facebook, and Twitter. The video can be viewed on GavinNewsom.com/video/special/change_california and YouTube and will be followed in the coming days by online, interactive policy discussions on a range of important issues facing the state.
The new spot comes on the heels of former President Clinton’s endorsement of Newsom last week, as well as the endorsements of Congressman Bob Filner (San Diego), former State Senator Sheila Kuehl (Santa Monica), 40 local elected officials and Democratic Party leaders, and more than 4,000 Students for Newsom on more than 50 California campuses.
In August, San Francisco Treasurer José Cisneros and Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting endorsed Mayor Newsom, in addition to Supervisors Michela Alioto-Pier, Carmen Chu, Bevan Dufty, and Sean Elsbernd. Campaign Chair State Senator Alex Padilla made California history as the first Latino President of the League of California Cities and the first Latino and youngest-ever Los Angeles City Council President.

Gavin Newsom voiceover:
“We’re Californians.
We’re not a state of memories,
we’re a state of dreams.
So what are we going to do next year?
Will we nominate a candidate who knows Sacramento
or leaders who know how to change it?”
Voiceover:
This is the race that will shake the system,
that will change the state constitution,
that will lower the 2/3 majority,
that will pass the budget,
that will fund the schools,
that will create the jobs,
that will provide the healthcare,
that will treat the millions of Californians,
that will join the race,
that will shake the system
that will change the state constitution,
that will lower the 2/3 majority,
that will pass the budget…
